About

In 1988, Iraq's dictator Saddam Hussein decided to put an end to the Kurds' desire for independence. This led him to commit a genocide that claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and forced hundreds of thousands more to flee. Many left everything they had, if they even had anything left after years of war.

Two of those who fled from Kurdistan in hopes of a better life were Izzat and Ramzia Mehidi, along with their five children. As if the transition from Kurdistan to Mysen in Østfold wasn’t dramatic enough, they now also have to live with the fact that the result of their escape would be a son who makes jokes about it. Both to remember what happened and also to process it.

"A Thank You Letter to Saddam" is his first solo show. In this show, he explores the contradictory emotions of both hating what happened and at the same time being grateful for the opportunities that came from it.

What do you think when the worst thing you've experienced might have given you a better life?

Galvan Mehidi has had a long career in Norwegian media as a director, actor, and TV host. Just a few years ago, he stepped into stand-up comedy and has quickly become one of the most active comedians on stage in Oslo, as well as in other parts of the country.
